The slow fade, week by week

Nobody says it's over. The replies just get slower until one day you notice you've been talking to yourself for a month.

The slow fade is the breakup without the conversation. No fight, no "we need to talk", no unfollow. Just a little less every week: longer gaps, shorter messages, plans that stop getting made. It's designed, whether or not they'd admit it, so that there's never one moment you can point to. That's what makes it hurt, and it's also why it's so easy to measure.

What it looks like in the timestamps

A slow fade has a signature. Reply times don't spike, they climb: 8 minutes, then 20, then an hour, then "tomorrow". The share of conversations you start goes from half to nearly all. Their messages lose words, then lose questions, then lose emoji. And there's usually a week where three or four of those turned at once. We call that the turning point.

Finding the week

Put every week of the chat on one line and look for the break: the first week their effort dropped and stayed dropped. In most chats we've read, it's unmistakable once you see it, and people usually know what happened that week the moment they see the date. A trip, a new job, someone else, a conversation that went badly. The chat doesn't know why. You often do.

Fade or busy?

Busy comes back. Fade doesn't. If the numbers dipped and recovered within two or three weeks, that's life. If it's been five weeks and nothing has recovered, that's a decision someone made without telling you.

Check it's not you

Run your own numbers next to theirs. Sometimes the person doing the fading is you, and you've been reading their slower replies as the cause when they were the response. That's not a nice thing to find out, but it's a useful one.

Then what

One direct question about the week it changed. Not a paragraph, not "no stress if not". Then stop opening conversations for two weeks and see whether any arrive. Either the line turns back up or you stop guessing. Both are better than where you are now.

Stop guessing. Check the chat.
